What is madecassoside?
Derived from centella asiatica, a medicinal plant native to the tropical regions of Asia, also known as "Gotu Kola" or "Tiger Grass", madecossoside is a bioactive compound with restorative, regenerating and soothing properties.
The madecassoside in our products appears in the list of ingredients on the packaging under the name "MADECASSOSIDE".
Where does it come from?
Madecassoside is extracted from the dried, crushed leaves of the Centella asiatica plant, purified, concentrated and obtained in dry form using environmentally-friendly extraction processes*, ensuring that its beneficial properties are preserved. It is biosourced and biodegradable.
In 2016, L'Oréal launched a tripartite project in partnership with its suppliers RAVINA in Madagascar (for the collection and drying of the leaves), INDFRAG in India (for the extraction of the ingredients, in particular Madecassoside), and the support of the Dutch NGO Union for Ethical BioTrade (UEBT) to guarantee the preservation of this plant while ensuring traceability, quality and fair remuneration for the women who pick the leaves.
This project has had a positive local socio-economic and environmental impact, while generating savings that benefit the entire value chain.

How does it work?
Recent studies have highlighted the multiple ways in which madecassoside acts on the skin.
Firstly, madecassoside helps to stimulate the synthesis of type I and type III collagen, promoting the regeneration of skin tissue and improving skin elasticity1.
Moreover, by reducing the prostaglandin PGE2, madecassoside is also known for its soothing action2.

How is it used in our products?
Madecassoside is specifically used in certain skincare formulas for sensitive skin, as is the case for certain La Roche Posay and L'Oréal Paris products . It helps support natural cell renewal and repair the damaged skin barrier.
It is also included in some of our Carita anti-ageing skincare formulas to help stimulate collagen production.
